Development and Validation of a DLS for Diabetic Retinopathy and Related Eye Diseases


In 2015, Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) started a global Artificial Intelligence Eye consortium named the Deep Eye Study - a multi-center AI research collaboration.  Together with 30 Co-Investigators from around the world, the study evaluated the performance of a Deep Learning System in detecting referable diabetic retinopathy, vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy, possible glaucoma, and age-related acular degeneration (AMD) in community and clinic-based multi-ethnic populations with diabetes.

The group concluded in the evaluation of retinal images from multi-ethnic cohorts of patients with diabetes, the DLS had high sensitivity and specificity for identifying diabetic retinopathy and related eye diseases.

The Deep Eye Study published the results in December 2017 Journal of the American Medical Assosciation.
